A child who can be as happy with his or her own company as with others is a child who is likely to be less demanding, less selfish and more thoughtful.

Having said that, it is, of course, important that a child, from a very early age, has the opportunity to play either with a partner or a group of friends. Such team activities allows them to develop a range of important social skills which will stand them in good stead for life. Simple skills such as listening carefully to what the other person is saying, and responding appropriately. Even just understanding and appreciating that other people have different opinions or ideas from your own, and that they are as individual as you. This is a very high concept for a child to master, and when they do begin to appreciate that people have their differences, but these are not necessarily right or wrong, they will be progressing significantly towards becoming a social creature rather than a purely selfish one. All young children are naturally selfish - it's their survival instinct handed down over many thousands of years, but once they reach a certain age, this needs to be shaken off and a social awareness developed. Playing with toys that require a partnership or small group gives them this chance.

Games, such as board games, that require thought, tactics and an awareness of the other person's point of view are crucial to conscious awareness of the other person's point of view. Physical games, such as ball games, similarly require an awareness of the other people, and may go on to help develop teamwork, leadership, and creating tactics on the move. These are all essential human skills, and this range of games and toys will help your child develop the range of cognitive, cultural and social skills they will need to become fully fledged members of our society.

The Tangram - Seven Boards of Cunning

The Tangram is a Chinese puzzle over a millennium old. It resembles the Western jigsaw puzzle, but differs from the same in always having seven pieces, which are fitted together in different ways to make an almost infinite number of different shapes. Each puzzle-game begins by posing or selecting a challenge--an outline or silhouette of a figure which is supposed to be the "solution" of the game. Make your solution by arranging the pieces of the tangram-set to attain a match with the given figure.

Several versions on its word etymology abound while its Chinese origin is almost uncontested. The most current version from Hanyu Pinyin (the romanization system for Chinese Mandarin developed by the People's Republic of China) calls the tangram: qi quiao ban--and is translated to literally mean "seven boards of cunning." Another version claims Tang is Cantonese for "Chinese" and Gram is for "something drawn"--therefore, "something Chinese drawn."

To make a tangram, just get a square piece of material and cut it into five right-triangles (there will be three different sizes: with two for each of the smaller and bigger pieces), a square, and a rhomboid (also called a parallelogram). If you cannot make this out, just get yourself any illustrated English dictionary, and look up the word--tangram; most of the time, you will find an illustration with it. Alternatively, just browser-search the word on the Internet...

Aside from mandating that all seven pieces (called tans) are used to solve a puzzle, the rules of the game further require that none of the pieces overlap and that the tans are touching one another. Puzzles must comply with these tenets in order to be considered as official or "compliant" tangram puzzles.

Some of the puzzles currently offered include: geometric shapes, numerals and alphabetic characters; man-made objects such as houses, buildings, bridges; human figures in action, different animals in many poses, and others. An estimate is that there are 6.13 million possible "compliant" configurations--where "compliant" means that at least one edge and at least one vertex of any tan is matched to (or touching) an edge or the vertex (or tip) of another.

Convex shapes are tangram configurations where a line segment drawn between any two points on the shape always pass through the interior of the configuration. These are a few simple polygons, with no recesses on them; which have been proven to number only thirteen. This count includes just the following: one right-triangle, six quadrilaterals, two pentagons, and four hexagons.

Paradoxes are two similar shapes, with one being a derivative of the other; almost the same but distinctively different because the other has a part of it missing. The most common of this is the Dudeney paradox of two monks-- where the other version has a foot missing.

Over all these years, the tangram has maintained its universal appeal as a worthy pastime and object of interest in art and design; while teaching geometric abstraction, proportion, and context.

What's in a Nickname?

There are many things that affect a child and his/her self-perception including nicknames. I had not thought much about this until recently when my husband tagged me with a new nickname - Buzz-saw. Now, I know I tend to always be busy, flitting from one project to another at high speed, but my personal self-image is not a Buzz-saw! I reminded him that he used to refer to me as Hummingbird or Butterfly. Much kinder and gentler, don't you think? I can see those two insects in me, although I will readily admit that I lack the grace of a butterfly. I suggested that a better name for me would be Jigsaw. Jigsaws are just sort of fun, happy, and handy.

Busy but not overwhelming. That is when he reminded me, "You don't get to pick your nickname. It is picked for you." Realizing I am a bit controlling, I had trouble accepting this bit of information, but I also understood that it is full of truth. Each of us is a unique individual who we know from the inside, but whom others may perceive very differently. They "see" us from an external point of view - the way we look, talk, act, and react. From their myopic view, nicknames first simmer and then boil over into something that may be attached to us forever.

Think about your own nickname. Is it something that you love because it fits so well? Has it grown on you? Is it sentimental? Does the nickname deliver a positive message about you? Is your nickname something you would like to change, and is the change possible? It seems many nicknames start innocently and then never go away. Some are funny - Sweetie, Honey-Dear, Pooh while others are cruel - Baldy, Tubby, Jughead.

Your nickname may just be a different version of your formal name. My nephew, for example, is James William. We always called him Billy and we refused to give it up even when he changed from Billy to James. Billy once, Billy always, was the motto of his devoted aunts. Billy finally stood firm and spread the word to NOT call him Billy ever again, he was James. We finally bowed to his wish, although we revert back to our favorite name at times.

Some nicknames are powerful and bring back happy memories. We named our second son Stanley Dane. Born at 5 a.m. on a Thursday, we quickly decided that although we loved the name Stanley, we would call him Dane. My husband headed off to his teaching job where the announcement was made about the birth of our son. In unison the school sang out "Stan the Man!" and it stuck. He has been Stan ever since.

If you love that nickname, rejoice in the glory. If that nickname hurts, determine how to convince others to stop using it. Think about the nicknames attached to someone you love. Is it a nickname of pride or one that is mean? A nickname can affect self-perception in so many ways.

On closer examination of Buzz-saw, I realize that it clearly reflects many aspects of my personality. While I may not love this new designation, I have to admit there is legitimacy in it. I hadn't fully realized how my buzzing was perceived by others. Although I still prefer Hummingbird, in reality it is too calm for me.

The kitchen is there for intermittent functions usually involving family dining. Although the physical building of the kitchen is still there in the middle of the night, it is not open for business at that time. You are a teenager, if you are feeling hungry in the night and you wish to eat something then make it yourself. It is not my place to wake up or be disturbed in order to feed you simply because you are either (a) overeating or (b) hungry at the inappropriate time.

No, you don't need new shoes, you had some shoes a week ago and they cost a lot of money. I gave you that money for shoes that you don't need. The new shoes that you wish to have are very similar to the old ones or, if they're not, they're so tremendously different that it is totally inappropriate for you to suddenly change fashion in a short space of a week. If you wish us to buy shoes, you must be prepared to wear the pairs that you have been bought for a considerable time - often more than a few weeks.

When the phone rings, please answer it, it is never for me. It is never for your brother or sister. It is never anybody asking me to buy double glazing or try to sell me something. It is for you. It is always for you and, until you leave this house, it will always be for you.

Don't worry - the teenager years will pass - just not quickly enough for you.

Fun Summer Scavenger Hunts for Kids

Kids love scavenger hunts and summer is the perfect time to host one. Scavenger hunts are so much fun that your kids will ask to play them over and over again. So, add a little variety to your summer treasure hunt planning and try one of these ideas.

Archaeological Dig

Use a sandbox or find a great spot at the beach to bury plastic dinosaurs and/or bones in the sand. If you do this at the beach, mark out the location with some tent stakes and string. Also, remember how many items you hid. Assign points to different types if you want to give the game an extra twist, but it's not necessary. Kids will enjoy the thrill of digging for the buried fossils regardless. If possible, give each child a pail and a shovel. Then, let the hunt begin. The child who finds the most dinosaurs/bones in the allotted time wins. If the children are very young, let them keep the dinosaurs they find as a prize.

Panning for Gold

Spray paint some tiny stones gold and use a hard plastic swimming pool or sandbox to mix more unpainted stones and lots of sand and water. For this hunt either get a steel sieve for each of the kids (they are available at most discount stores) or cut pieces of plastic screening for them to use to pan for gold. The child who finds the most gold in the allotted time wins. Please note: It is important that the stones you use are very tiny or it will be too easy for the children to spot them without sifting through the sand and other stones.

Get a kid's jigsaw puzzle that has large pieces (20 or less is optimal). Hide the puzzle pieces all over the play area. Kids have to find the pieces and put the puzzle together to win. If you want more than one team to compete, paint the backs of each team's puzzle pieces a different color.

Clean Up Hunt

Make a list of things that are routinely left around the yard and have your children compete for who can find the most items in the allotted time and put them back in their proper place.

Nature Scavenger Hunt Bingo

Make up some blank bingo cards and get the kids to write or draw in a different nature item in each square. Then, have them trade cards with someone else and send them out to find the items on their card. Play till someone gets a bingo or a full card.

Internet Scavenger Hunt
